HTML Errors

The HTML Errors tab contains error-checking options for HTML documents.

1.     HTML Validation

Contains options for validating HTML.

a.     Default DTD

The drop down list contains the Document Type Definition that will be used as a basis for validation. The DTD determines which HTML tags and attributes are valid for the documents being checked for errors. Choose the DTD from the list that best describes the type of document to be validated. The default DTD is EDGAR Hybrid (3.2/CSS), which validates documents to comply with SEC EDGAR regulations.

b.    Check Mode

Drop down list contains options for setting the strictness of the validation function. Items in this drop-down list will load option sets in this tab. Setting the ‘Check Mode to Loose will instruct the validator to ignore certain types of errors that are not crucial to the display and compliance of the document. The Custom mode allows you to set custom validation options.

c.     Display Fatal/Suspendable Errors Only

Instructs the Validate function to display only those errors that will cause an HTML document to be rejected by the EDGAR System. This option is only available if the Check Mode is set to Loose and is recommended only when users are working with HTML documents created by other HTML editing software.

2.     HTML Code Structure

Contains options for validating the structure of the HTML code.

a.     Use XHTML Conventions

Validate HTML documents using XHTML conventions rather than HTML coding conventions.

b.    Warn of Obsolete/Deprecated Items

Produce warnings when the validator encounters an obsolete or deprecated item in an HTML document. Deprecated items include HTML elements and attributes that have been removed from the latest version of the W3C HTML specification. Certain deprecated items will still display properly in some web browsers.

c.     Check Tag Nesting

Ensure that all the HTML tags in a document are nested properly.

d.    Check Character Entities

Instruct the validator to check all HTML character entities to ensure that they are valid.

e.     Value Quoting

Drop down list contains options to validate the quoting of attribute values. You can choose to set the validator to check value quoting loosely, or to ensure that all values are quoted to comply with W3C specifications.

3.     Name and Linking (NAME and ID)

Contains options for validating HTML hypertext links and ID names.

a.     Test for Unique Names

Validator to check each ID name within the document and verify that it is unique. Duplicate ID names will be reported in the validation log.

b.    W3C Compliant Names

Validator to check each name in the document for compliance with W3C naming conventions.

c.     Test External URL Links

Test if external URL links in the document are valid. Using this option requires an Internet connection and may slow down the validation process depending on the speed of the connection.

4.     Browser/Extra

Options for validating browser compatibility and best practices.

a.     Check Best Practices/Applicability

Check the HTML code and CSS style properties for best practices, as put forth by the W3C, and for compatibility across various browsers.

b.    Symbol Font Use (non-IE Problems)

This option should remain unchecked (default), unless otherwise directed by SEC Publisher Support.
